Wenela Town Square (2020 Lilongwe City Council Future Town Development Competition Entry)
Wenela Town Square establishes itself as a vibrant mixed-use commercial hub, designed to accommodate a market, retail spaces, offices, and mass parking. Conceived as a true “melting pot,” the project acts as an economic catalyst—connecting all levels of trade and exchange, from local farmers to international business leaders. At its heart, Wenela is envisioned as a symbol of African pride and economic excellence, reflecting both Malawian values and a broader continental identity.
Positioned strategically between Lilongwe’s Old Town and New Town, the site is a vital connector between two high-energy corridors, Kenyatta Road and Chilambula Highway. This context inspired the project’s central design feature: a bold boulevard cutting through the development, generating activity and guiding flows to the market and retail fronts. The program is organized with intention: the multi-level market and parkade anchor the southern edge of the site, while office and retail spaces occupy the northern edge. This separation creates clarity, daylight access, and functional balance across the precinct.
Architecturally, Wenela Town Square draws strength from light yet expressive materials. Steel, glass, and perforated facades form a modern, transparent language, while bold geometric forms assert its civic presence. Bronze, gold, and light are woven throughout the scheme—symbols of Africa’s wealth, cultural diversity, and ingenuity. At the entrance, a sculptural canopy structure crowns the boulevard, embodying motion and resilience while welcoming visitors into the square.
More than a commercial hub, Wenela Town Square aspires to be a landmark of connection, pride, and progress for Lilongwe and beyond.
